GMO, the New Way to Tackle World Problems?
GMO is an abbreviation for genetically modified organism. This technique has been used since 1973 and was founded by Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen. The method was created by taking a gene from a bacteria that was found to be resistant against the particular antibiotic kanamycin and inserting it in a plasmid. They then later introduced the creation to another bacteria, which made the organism able to survive in the presence of the kanamycin. In my opinion this will be very useful in the future. Therefore it is of utmost importance that we put a lot of research into this area of science.
First and foremost the GMO method makes it possible for developing countries to feed their people. The food that this method will be able to achieve is easier to grow and cheaper to produce due to the fact that it can be developed in a way that repels insects for example. This means that the crop does not require any pesticides and can therefore, be cultivated for less money, making it more available for countries with a shaky or nonexistent economy.
Secondly, by using and funding this technology it will contribute to the environment. For instance, as mentioned before, it can be used to reduce the emissions of toxic waste produced by pesticides like the substance DDT. DDT is considered an environment toxic substance and is a big problem for the nature. With GMO we can also create food with more nutrients in the product, meaning that the crops can be grown on a smaller area, aiding the environment by keeping the forests of the planet intact while still being able to feed a large amount of people.
However, some scientists believe that it will harm the nature instead. This is because of the reason that if the GMO plant manages to spread its genes to other plants, the GMO might erase the current wild plants. This will render the natural insects that feed on these plants unable to get their nutrition and therefore cause a disturbance in the ecosystem. While I do partly agree with these people that believe this might happen, I think that it is safe to say that before we use this technique, we need to put a lot of research in this field. The same goes for everything we invent or discover and therefore I don’t really think it’s a valid argument for not using it. I see it more as of a reminder and as a warning.
Finally, I think GMO is worth looking into, because everyone makes something of it. For example, the already developed countries gain on it because of the fact that they can sell it to the poor countries for a small amount of money and the poor people will get their death rate down which means that they have healthier individuals making it easier to build up their country and make it into a developed country. If it is also made accessible for everyone, small farmers can profit from it as well since they can, as I mentioned before, cultivate without any expensive pesticides for instance, making it a win win situation.
In conclusion GMO is an amazing method and probably has an infinite number regarding use. The things that can be achieved with this science is beyond our imagination. Develop countries, contribute to the environment and making money of it at the same time. These are just a few examples of what GMO is capable of. So the question still stands: Is GMO the new way of tackling the world problems? I truly believe so.
