Genetically Modified Organisms - Stop It Now!
In all times humans have used some different methods to produce and transform the genome of animals and plants. The methods have been used are the crossbreed- and the processing methods. Thanks to these methods, the genetics has come far within the progress to engender new opportunities. One example is to add characteristics in different eatables, depending on the situation. Genetically modified foods are very debated and there are many advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, the genetically modified organisms are part of a really risky project, because GMO can cause cancer and other diseases. Furthermore, it can lead to consequences regarding biodiversity in many bad ways and an example is that insects can be extinct.
The scientists have proven that the genetically modified plants can build weeds that are difficult to combat. For instance plants that have genes that are resistant to herbicides, can be transmitted with pollen from genetically modified colza to wild turnips. As a result of this process it has built a weed that is difficult to combat. Consequently, the environment and our health will be affected in a really bad way, because there are a lot of risks about the safety of the process of producing the genetically modified foods.
Secondly, the crops that are resistant to insects, can also injure the insects that are important to our ecosystem. Due to the fact that it may lead to an imbalance in the biodiversity, the genetically modified organism can moreover cause a change or a reduction in the genetical variation of animals. This can lead to an extinction of species, which can lead to consequences like a disruption of the ecosystem.
However, there are people who think that genetically modified food can help nations in poor countries and in addition reduce famine. This is also the idea of the “golden rise”.
It’s made by adding a gene that contains nutrients and vitamin A and the “golden rice” is also made to help people that are starving. Many people believe that this method is the key to stop the famine and to reduce the high number of people in the world who are malnourished.
Unfortunately, the scientists have been very critical to the “golden rice” and they have claimed that the genetically modified food can’t reduce famine. This is not the right solution to famine and health. Instead we need to focus on the methods that already exist. Then there are some risks about the production of the genetically modified foods. The reason is that a lot of high concentrations of chemicals involved during the manufacturing, are harmful to your health and can cause diseases like cancer, mental problems and physical problems. Do you really want your children to be sick or to die because of the genetically modified organisms?
To sum up, the genetically modified organisms can affect the nature in a really bad way and it can, for example, lead to an involuntary production of weeds that are difficult to combat. It can also lead to an imbalance in the biodiversity, which affects the important insects negatively. Of course, the genetically modified organisms are a risky way to go if you believe that genetically modified foods can save lives, reduce the famine and help people from starving in poor countries. Nevertheless, there are ethical doubts if the genetically modified organisms will come the right people or to those of privilege. Who actually earns the money of the production of the “golden rice” and will the rich companies become even richer? As I mentioned in the introduction about cancer and other diseases, we can get diseases by the chemicals in the production of the GMO. I wouldn’t like to live in a world where these kinds of ethical problems exist. We need to stop the production of the genetically modified organisms, and I believe that we can do it!
